England
The provision of certain social care, nursing and residential services in England is regulated under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010. The services regulated are (subject to certain exceptions):
* personal care for persons unable to provide it for themselves by reason of old age, illness or disability
* accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care
* accommodation for persons who require treatment for substance misuse
* accommodation and nursing or personal care in the further education sector
* treatment of disease, disorder or injury
* assessment or medical treatment for persons detained under the Mental Health Act
* surgical procedures
* diagnostic and screening procedures
* management of supply of blood and blood derived products etc.
* transport services, triage and medical advice provided remotely
* maternity and midwifery services
* termination of pregnancies
* services in slimming clinics
* nursing care
* family planning services

Northern Ireland
In Northern Ireland, social care, nursing and residential services are regulated under the Health and Personal Social Services (Quality, Improvement and Regulation) (Northern Ireland) Order 2003. Regulated establishments include:
* a children's home
* a day care setting
* an independent clinic
* an independent hospital
* a nursing home
* a residential care home
* a residential family centre
Regulated agencies include:
* a domiciliary care agency
* a fostering agency
* an independent medical agency
* a nursing agency
* a voluntary adoption agency

Scotland
Social care, nursing and residential services are regulated under the Public Services Reform (Scotland) Act 2010 and services covered include:
* a support service
* a care home service
* a school care accommodation service
* a nurse agency
* a child care agency
* a secure accommodation service,
* an offender accommodation service
* an adoption service
* a fostering service
* an adult placement service
* child minding
* day care of children
* housing support service

Wales
The Care Standards Act 2000 and Welsh regulations apply in Wales and the following activities are regulated:
* care homes for adults, including care homes with nursing facilities
* domiciliary care agencies
* adult placement schemes
* nurses’ agencies
* children’s homes
* day care services for children: childminders, full day care, sessional day care, out of school care, crèches and open access play
public sector and independent fostering agencies
* public sector and voluntary adoption agencies
* boarding schools, residential special schools and further education colleges which accommodate students under 18
* residential family centres.
